He made a pointed reference to the immense contribution made by the Roerich family in bringing the countries to closer proximity.

The main participant from Indian side, Prof. Dr. Lokesh Chandra, Director, International Academy of Indian Culture, who stands prominent as a scholar on Roerichs and has made signal contribution to the research studies on Roerichs, underscored the significance of the Roerich Pact.

The first international treaty in the sphere of preservation of the world cultural heritage was created on the initiative of the distinguished Russian peace-maker, artist and traveler Nicholas Roerich. For the first time, he represented this idea in 1904. On April 15, 1935, the treaty concerning the protection of art, academic institutions and historical monuments—the Roerich Pact—was signed by the heads of the government of 21 countries of the American continent. The ideas of the Roerich Pact gained the sincere support of cultural figures in India. Rabindranath Tagore wrote to N. Roerich expressing his deep appreciation on the Pact. Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of free India, approved of the Pact in 1948. The spiritual depth, humanistic orientation, aspiration to unite the mankind on the foundation of Beauty and Knowledge of the Roerich Pact are extremely vital in our modern world. The collaboration of the forum’s participants in New Delhi, Simla and Kullu may become an important step in maintaining the ideas of the Roerich Pact regulations, in popularizing the concept of culture contained in the Roerichs heritage, as well as in facilitating the effective social and cultural ties between Russia and India.
