President Dmitry Medvev, on an official visit to the Astrakhan Region, saw how sturgeon aquaculture sites are being protected in the Volga River.
During a river cruise, the president’s motorboat pulled along side a Caspian Fisheries Research Institute vessel which is involved in sturgeon breeding. After looking over a reservoir filled with young fish, Medvedev released about a hundred sturgeon into the Volga River.
Astrakhan Region Governor Alexander Zhilkin said Russian enterprises in the Volga-Caspian Region have released some 1.5 million sturgeon since April. Zhilkin said it would be necessary to release up to 100 million sturgeon annually around the Caspian Sea for the population of the precious fish to reach 1990’s levels.
