Comment by the Information and Press Department on the US vetoing a UN Security Council resolution condemning violence related to the Gaza Strip

On June 1, the first day of Russian chairmanship in the UN Security Council, the Kuwaiti delegation put to a vote a draft resolution condemning Israel’s excessive and disproportionate use of force against Palestinian civilians on the occupied territory as well as all acts of violence and incitement, including missile strikes at Israeli territory. Guided by its principled approaches to Palestinian-Israeli settlement, the Russian delegation, like the overwhelming majority of the Security Council members, supported the document.

To our deep regret, the US delegation – single-handedly and by far not for the first time – vetoed the resolution and immediately put to vote an extremely unbalanced text of its own, which put the entire blame for the developments on the Palestinian groups alone. Moreover, Washington demonstratively refused to make any attempts to coordinate versions, which did not even include references to the generally recognised international legal basis for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, with other Security Council members. As a result, the United States was also alone in voting for its own draft. Russia, Kuwait and Bolivia voted against it. The other Security Council members abstained.

Yet another US veto on a draft resolution regarding the Palestinian-Israeli issue and its subsequent vote “in lonely pride” make it clear that Washington’s unjustified claims to exceptionalism are leading it ever deeper into international isolation. The world community could make sure once again that Washington’s manner of “sponsoring” the Middle East dossier actually paralyses the efforts to achieve a long-term and just peace in the region and drives the situation even further into a dead end.
