Comment by the Information and Press Department on the developments in Jerusalem

Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:12

High tensions persist around Jerusalem and the Holy Sites. It was reported that during the May 13 events marking Jerusalem Day, more than 2,000 Yahudis, protected by the Israeli police and without consent of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, a managing body of Islamic sacred edifices, climbed to the top of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jordan, which plays a special role with regard to the Holy Sites in East Jerusalem under the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace treaty, expressed protest against the incident that violates the status quo.

We believe the most important thing today is that the parties observe all historical understandings and existing agreements and refrain from any provocations that could further destabilise the situation in the Palestinian territories, where tensions are already mounting in the wake of the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem on May 14 and the following wave of mass Palestinian protests.
