Comment by the Information and Press Department on celebrations of Victory Day in Ukraine

Blinded by their hatred of Russia, the Ukrainian authorities continue to revise history and are deliberately distorting their own country’s recent history in the nationalist spirit. The focus of this campaign is on the history of the Great Patriotic War of 1941−1945, the huge historical importance of which is a constant cause of annoyance for the current Ukrainian political leaders. This year once again, they attempted to give an anti-Russia meaning to Victory Day celebrations by downplaying the importance of May 9 for our peoples.

The official media tone was set by President Petr Poroshenko and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andrey Paruby. Their insulting references to the Russian authorities were remindful of the characters of Anton Chekhov’s famous story about a provincial mental asylum. They distorted the results of the Great Patriotic War, glorified Nazi accomplices and whitewashed Nazi supporters from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Taken all together, this was tantamount to insulting the historical memory of the Ukrainian people, who sustained huge losses in the fight against Nazism.

The baleful rhetoric of the Kiev leaders was buttressed by the actions taken by the neo-Nazi thugs under their control. On May 9, they attacked Russian diplomat Konstantin Vorobyov, head of the Kiev office of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo). They threatened him with violence and even murder. While the Kiev police looked on, these gutter patriots attacked famous Ukrainian human rights activist Yelena Berezhnaya. They bullied war veterans as well as senior citizens and chanted offensive slogans. On the same day, nationalists attempted to set fire to the local television network Inter for broadcasting a Victory Day concert. Instead of doing their duty, the Ukrainian police looked for the prohibited Soviet-era symbols at the same time as detaining those in possession of them. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) summarily deported Russian journalists, who had barely entered Ukraine, under the pretext of fighting “Russian propaganda.”

This mayhem was designed to downplay the importance of Victory celebrations, intimidate Ukrainians and discourage them from ever taking part in large-scale commemoration events.

However, none of these efforts had the desired result. The campaign launched to discredit Victory Day has failed: on May 9, thousands of people around Ukraine took part in commemoration events, walked in the streets with the photographs of their fathers and grandfathers who fought in the Great Patriotic War and laid flowers and wreaths to war monuments and memorials. We respect their courage.

It is becoming obvious that the vaccine of nationalism, the doze of which the Kiev government has increased several times, is no longer effective. We are convinced that all the attempts to rewrite the history of the Great Victory and to erase it from national memory will not succeed.
