Comment by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department on the act of vandalism committed in Prague on the monument to Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev

On May 8 and 9, the world community remembers the bloodiest war in the history of mankind, which claimed tens of millions of lives. Most Europeans gratefully bring flowers to the graves of war heroes – soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition, partisans and resistance fighters who fell in battles for the liberation of the world from Nazism.

However, some do not seem to regard the Great Victory as a commemoration day. With indignation we found out that an act of vandalism was committed in Prague against the monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Konev, erected in that city in acknowledgement of the contribution to the liberation of the Czech capital from German occupation and the protection of this architectural gem from destruction.

This blasphemous act is an insult to the memory of the Red Army soldiers and their Czechoslovak brothers in arms, who in the very last days of the war gave their lives for the present generation of Czechs to live in peace, raise their children and not be afraid of bombing and shelling explosions.

We expect that the Czech authorities will take immediate action to find and punish the criminals, to restore the monument to Marshal Konev and to ensure the preservation of the monument in its original form. We are confident that a large number of Czech citizens, for whom the anniversary of victory is our common holiday, will join the call.
