On February 27-28, Geneva hosted the 19th session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities whose members reviewed the Russian Federation’s initial report on fulfilling the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection Grigory Lekarev headed the Russian delegation that included representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Healthcare Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities, the Ministry of Transport, the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Penitentiary Service and the Prosecutor-General’s Office.

While reviewing the report, experts from the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities were informed in detail on the Russian Federation’s progress in fulfilling the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities since the Convention’s ratification in 2012. Members of the Russian delegation submitted exhaustive information on the current national policy regarding persons with disabilities.

Committee members were briefed on socio-economic security projects for persons with disabilities, efforts to help them receive a high-quality education and to find jobs, as well as the provision of a barrier-free environment for them.

Committee experts said they were satisfied with the open and constructive dialogue with the representative Russian delegation on the entire range of matters concerning the implementation of the Convention’s provisions in the Russian Federation.

Under the established procedure, Committee members will draft concluding remarks to further improve the situation of persons with disabilities in Russia before the end of the current session.

The Russian Federation remains committed to close cooperation with the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in fulfilling the obligations assumed under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for the all-round and efficient implementation of the rights of this part of the population.
