The 9th round of intra-Syrian talks were held in Vienna on January 25−26 with the delegations of the Syrian government and the opposition Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC).The mediation was carried out by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura. The parties resumed discussions of a political solution to the Syrian crisis based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the agreements reached during the UN-led intra-Syrian talks, primarily the constitutional reform. They also held in-depth discussions on the preparations for the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which will be held in Sochi on January 29 and 30, and its possible results.

In this context, the Russian delegation and UN representatives reached an understanding on several matters on the sidelines of the Vienna meeting.

Moscow has taken note of de Mistura’s statement following the 9th round of the Vienna talks and welcomes the decision of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to send his Special Envoy for Syria to the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi.
