The First Global Forum of Young Diplomats was held in Sochi on October 16-20 as part of the World Festival of Youth and Students. The event was the culmination of over four years of work by the Russian Foreign Ministry's Council of Young Diplomats, who held similar regional forums in which only young diplomats took part by tradition.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke at the forum’s opening. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky and Rector of the Foreign Ministry’s Moscow State Institute of International Relations Anatoly Torkunov took part in the subsequent discussion. The forum was attended by over 120 young diplomats from 60 countries. They discussed information security, terrorism and new challenges and threats.

Based on the results of the forum, the participants adopted a document (recommendations) reaffirming the importance of regular global forums of young diplomats and supporting the idea of establishing an international association of young diplomats.
