On October 12, representatives of the Palestinian movements Fatah and Hamas signed an agreement in Cairo under which the Palestinian central government is to establish full administrative control over the Gaza Strip by December 1, 2017. It was also announced that a meeting of all Palestinian political parties and organisations will be convened in the Egyptian capital on November 21 to discuss further steps to promote national unity.
Moscow welcomes the intra-Palestinian accords mediated through the active role of Egypt. We proceed from the assumption that they meet the legitimate national aspirations of the Palestinian people. We are calling on the Palestinian parties to implement all the outlined steps that aim at the crucial goal of achieving unity on the political platform of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and significantly improving the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. We expect that this event will help steer the Middle East peace process out of the deadlock and resume direct talks on the ultimate Palestinian-Israeli settlement on the well-known international legal basis.
