Press release on a meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers

Wednesday, 11 October 2017 09:55

A regular meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers was held in Sochi on October 10 within the framework of Russia’s CIS Chairmanship in 2017.

As usual, the meeting was held in a constructive and trust-based atmosphere. The ministers discussed a broad range of matters related to strengthening and otherwise promoting multilateral cooperation within the CIS.

They exchanged opinions on key regional and international topics as well as discussed foreign policy cooperation within the CIS plus its development prospects. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reviewed the joint efforts taken over the past year in keeping with the goals and tasks set out in Russia’s Concept of the CIS Chairmanship. He highlighted the need to enhance the CIS role in international affairs and to promote an integration process within the post-Soviet republics.

The ministers have approved a draft statement of the CIS heads of state on supporting families and traditional family values, initiated by Russia in the context of the Year of the Family held in 2017. This document reflects the CIS countries’ vision on the key role of the family in the cultural, spiritual, moral, civic, social and intellectual development of future generations.

In view of the increased number of vandalised war memorials in some countries, Russia submitted a draft Statement on Preventing and Precluding the Destruction and Desecration of Monuments and Other Objects of Historical, Religious or Cultural Significance. Those at the meeting agreed to coordinate this document as soon as possible.

Following the discussions on strengthening partnership in cultural affairs, the ministers approved the proposals, which were submitted by the CIS Council for Cultural Cooperation, to declare 2019, the Year of the Book and 2020, the Year of the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. They approved action plans for the implementation of two strategies on the promotion of international youth and tourism cooperation in 2018-2020 as well as adopted a programme for supporting and promoting the development of national sports.

They also coordinated documents on cooperation in the law enforcement sphere, namely the draft concept of anti-corruption cooperation and the draft agreement on the exchange of information in the area of fighting terrorism and other violent forms of extremism and their financing.

When discussing military cooperation, the ministers focused on improving the Joint CIS Air Defence System and approved the guidelines for adjusting it to the tasks of aerospace defence.

The ministers have agreed to hold the next meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers in Minsk, Belarus, on April 6, 2018.

In all, they adopted 18 draft decisions, seven of which will be forwarded for approval to the CIS Heads of State Council meeting to be held in Sochi on October 11, and one to the CIS Heads of Government Council meeting to be held in Tashkent on November 3.
