Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greetings to the Participants in the Event Marking the 10th Anniversary of the Ilulissat Declaration

Wednesday, 23 May 2018 11:17

Dear participants,

The Arctic is a territory of low political tension and successful development of multilateral cooperation. This has become possible due to our joint efforts guided by the determination to resolve pressing issues through dialogue based on the rule of international law and mutual respect.

Such approach was enshrined by the coastal States in the Ilulissat Declaration 10 years ago. This document has contributed to ensuring stability and predictability in the Arctic region. The provisions of the Declaration remain relevant today, serving as important guidelines for finding ways to address current challenges.

Russia is convinced that there is no potential for conflict in the Arctic as international law provides reliable guarantees for securing the interests of both coastal and other States. At the same time, we note that the coastal States have a special role in and responsibility for the future of the region.

Our country is committed to the sustainable development of the Arctic, including its indigenous peoples, and advocates stronger international cooperation in the Arctic region and responsible behavior in the Arctic Ocean.

I hope that this meeting on the occasion of the 10 Anniversary of the Ilulissat Declaration will help step up collective efforts with a view to achieving these high goals.

SERGEY LAVROV
