On May 18, Moscow hosted a meeting of senior officials from Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the deputy foreign minister level. The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.

The officials discussed plans for developing the strategic partnership as per the decisions of the ASEAN-Russia summit held in Sochi in 2016, as well as the practical stage of preparations for а Russia-ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Singapore in August this year. They also held in-depth consultations on ways to promote political, economic and cultural cooperation.

The deputy ministers exchanged opinions on current international and regional issues, including joint efforts against common threats and challenges, the creation of security architecture in Asia Pacific, closer coordination on multilateral venues, as well as promoting ASEAN’s ties with the Eurasian Economic Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

It was agreed that the next meeting of senior officials from Russian and ASEAN nations would be held in Indonesia in 2019.
