Press release on a statement issued by the Permanent Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation regarding missile strikes on Syria

Thursday, 19 April 2018 05:36

On April 14, the Permanent Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) convened for an emergency meeting at the initiative of Russia and CSTO Secretary General Yury Khachaturov to discuss the consequences of missile strikes on Syria. The meeting was attended by permanent and plenipotentiary representatives of the CSTO member states, executive members of the CSTO Secretariat, as well as Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov.

The CSTO Secretary General and the Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff delivered their reports on this matter, while the Russian representative updated the meeting participants on the Russian assessment of the missile strikes on Syria delivered by the United States and its allies.

Following the discussions, those present at the meeting adopted a statement of the CSTO Permanent Council condemning the missile strikes delivered by the US with support from the UK and France on April 14, 2018 in violation of the fundamental principles and norms of international law and the UN Charter and without a UN Security Council mandate. The statement says, in part, that these actions run counter to the efforts taken to eradicate the terrorist threat in Syria as soon as possible, have worsened the humanitarian situation in Syria and are also fraught with the further escalation of tension in the region as well as the rest of the world.

The CSTO Permanent Council has appealed to the UN Security Council to do its best to attain the goals of restoring and maintaining international peace and security set to it by the international community.

On the same day, Kazakhstan as the country presiding over the CSTO sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General, asking him to circulate this statement of the CSTO Permanent Council as an official document of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.
