Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of Vietnam Pham Binh Minh Hanoi, March 23, 2018

Mr Minister,

Friends,

We are glad to have this opportunity to visit Vietnam and to meet with our old partners again. Our friendship goes back decades, to the period of our joint struggle for justice. We are grateful to our Vietnamese friends for remembering the assistance we provided during the liberation struggle and the post-war restoration of your country. Today, we continue to uphold the principles of justice and truth in international affairs, including by coordinating our efforts at international organisations, primarily the UN.

We hope to be able to hold in-depth discussions on the implementation of the agreements that were reached during a visit by President of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang to Russia last autumn. As you said, last autumn our presidents also met on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Danang. I would like to once again thank you for the excellent organisation of that important event.

Thank you for inviting us to Vietnam. I hope that our talks will be fruitful.
