Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greetings to participants in a ceremony on completing the destruction of chemical weapons in Russia

Thursday, 28 September 2017 06:51

I would like to extend my cordial greetings to participants in the ceremony on completing the destruction of chemical weapons in the Russian Federation.
Russia has fulfilled its commitments on eliminating its stockpiles of these deadly arms – about 40,000 tonnes – ahead of schedule. The implementation of such a large-scale project with the participation of over 15 foreign states and under comprehensive international control is a graphic example of productive multilateral cooperation. Despite the existing difficulties, one of the world’s biggest arsenals of chemical arms has been eliminated. Special credit for this achievement goes to all those who have consistently and selflessly contributed to this work over two decades, thereby promoting security, trust and mutual understanding in international affairs.
Symbolically, this event coincides with the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the creation of an organisation to administer it – the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Russia was there from the beginning. Today we continue working vigorously to consolidate non-proliferation, which is particularly evident in the successful implementation of President Vladimir Putin’s initiative on Syria’s chemical demilitarisation.
I sincerely wish you good health, prosperity, new successes and all the best.
