Briefing by Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria (March 2, 2018)

Friday, 02 March 2018 10:52

The Russian Centre for Reconciliation continues cooperation with international organisations and Syrian government on peaceful settlement of the crisis, stabilizing humanitarian situation and implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2401.

Despite the established ceasefire regime in the country, there are daily provocation and cases of ceasefire violation by illegal armed formations in the Eastern Ghouta as well as in the provinces of Aleppo and Latakia.

Terrorists continue shelling at residential quarters of Damascus and suburbs. Over the last 24 hours, terrorists conducted 11 shelling attacks. In total 28 mines have been fired, with some of them targeting the Russian Centre for Reconciliation. There are reports on destruction and civilian casualties.

The Russian Centre for Reconciliation continues humanitarian operation to enable civilians to leave the Eastern Ghouta, and to evacuate sick and wounded.

Another humanitarian pause was declared in the period from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. The humanitarian corridor has been functioning for four days now; everything is ready for civilians to come.

Residents of the Eastern Ghouta are provided with information about exit routes and rules for safe leaving the area through the humanitarian corridor.

Situation near the check point is still strained. Since yesterday evening, snipers have been shelling at approaches to the check point. Today, the Jaysh al-Islam terrorists have carried out two mortar attacks from eastern outskirts of Douma targeting the security corridor leading to the check point near Muhayam al-Waffedin.

The Russian Centre for Reconciliation receives a lot of hotline messages from residents of the Eastern Ghouta. People tell about unbearable living conditions and repressions. Besides, terrorists do not let civilian leave the zone.

People try to use other possible exits to leave terrorist-controlled areas without crossing the prepared humanitarian corridor.

Two children managed to approach the check point under fire from the insurgents tonight. The Syrian government helped them to cross the check point and protected from terrorists’ fire.

The Syrian side got information about provocations prepared by the Jabhat al-Nusra, Feylaq al-Rahman and Akhrar al-Sham using poisonous agents. The insurgents intend to accuse government troops of using chemical weapons in the Eastern Ghouta against civilians. Therefore, the operation is being prepared near the line of contact of the SAA. Victims of the attack will be exploited so that western countries could blame the Syrian government for using chemical weapons against the people.

The Syrian Command categorically states that it does not plan to use chemical weapons. Moreover, it does no possess chemical weapons at all.

With these actions, terrorists take efforts to undermine the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2401 as well as humanitarian operation to evacute people from the Eastern Ghouta.

The Russian Centre for Reconciliation urges leaders of illegal armed formations to cease violence against the people and provide unimpeded exit for civilians from the dangerous zones.

Despite the escalation in separated areas of the country, the Russian Centre for Reconciliation continues stabilizing humanitarian situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.

Settlements in the provinces of Daraa, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor received about 3 tons of food supplies, and drinking water.

Over the last 24 hours, Russian military medics provided medical aid for 214 Syrians.

As part of implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution and humanitarian relief plan, the UN humanitarian convoy safely reached the settlement of Afrin, Aleppo province. People in need received 159 tons of food and medical supplies.
