Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the awards ceremony of the People’s Football League (PFL) National Championship, Moscow, June 2, 2018

Dear friends,

This is a real celebration – this is what all of us are thinking today. We all wanted the greatest possible level of excitement from the game. It was a real sporting victory.

This year, the finals were the last matches of the season for the People’s Football League (PFL). The number of teams taking part in the championship across Russia this year has grown to some 250.

I believe this is proof that people need the PFL as an initiative that is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and to provide our young people with an example of how they should work in a team and continually strive for victory. This year, Moscow won this championship for the first time.

To be honest, being a member of the Breeze Club, I hoped for a different result. But being a diplomat, I always stand for dialogue (Dialogue is the team that has won the PFL championship – Ed.). Anyway, Breeze ended second, which is an achievement as well.

The team from Ufa has reaffirmed its status as a participant in the European cup. We will have our own European cup tournaments yet, and everything will go well with our football.

I would like to congratulate the winners and to wish them new victories and sports achievements.
