The 70th Anniversary of russian-indian Diplomatic Relations: Closing Gala Concert

On April 13, a solemn gala ceremony took place at Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra in New Delhi thus completing the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and India. Minister of State for External Affairs H.E. Mr M J Akbar, Member of Parliament, Chairperson of the India-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group and movie star Ms Hema Malini, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of India H.E. Mr Nikolay R. Kudashev were the Guests of Honour at the remarkable event.

The ceremony was attended by the officials of the Russian diplomatic mission, representatives of the Indian MEA and other government institutions, public figures and politicians, activists of Indo-Russian Friendship Societies, Indian students learning the Russian language, and Russian compatriots.

At the beginning of the official part of the gala night, H.E. Mr M J Akbar referred to the words of Indian Minister of External Affairs Smt Sushma Swaraj and emphasized the genuinely unique and strong nature of Indo-Russian friendship, which not only belongs to the past, but also looks into the future. According to the Minister of State, the relations between our countries represent a phenomenon in international relations, a successful pattern of cooperation, coexistence and co-creation marked by a high level of unprecedented trust, mutual respect and understanding, as well as mutual support of the core interests of each other.

Russian Ambassador to India Mr Nikolay R. Kudashev quoted the welcoming address of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the participants of the closing gala ceremony highlighting that “today, special and privileged, truly strategic partnership between Russia and India rests upon eventful political dialogue at various levels, including the uppermost one”. The Ambassador also mentioned that the event represented the peak of celebrations marking the jubilee year of Russian-India diplomatic relations, which not only summarized the achievements of the past, but also laid the groundwork for our future cooperation in political, trade and economic, scientific and technological, cultural and humanitarian spheres. 

Famous cultural figure Ms Hema Malini said that she, as the Chairperson of the India-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group, considered it necessary to strengthen the inter-parliamentary dimension of Indo-Russian cooperation. As the actress of the “Alibaba Aur 40 Chor” India-USSR movie, she stressed the need to resume the practice of film co-production, now between India and Russia.

The evening saw a colourful concert performed by Russian and Indian artists, the students of the Russian Classical Ballet School and children's dancing group from the Russian Embassy School in India. During the event, the guests watched a trailer of the joint Indo-Russian movie, to be released in 2020. 

The ceremony was covered by the TV media and large Indian and Russian news agencies.
