The 3–month long Festival of Russian Language and Literature came to an end on December 20, 2012.

The festival that was organised jointly by the Russian Cultural Centre, Moscow based “Russkiy Mir” Foundation and Pushkin Centre of Russian Language comprised master classes and round table discussions on Russian language teaching, seminars on Russian literature, Olympiads for students learning Russian Language, publishing and releasing of a book “Rosemary’s collection – Russian poems”, which comprised lyrics by Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Andrei Voznesenskiy and Evgeniy Evtushenko in Malayalam.
As part of the festival, Kerala’s renowned poet and translator Rosemary was decorated with Sergey Esenin Award for her contribution to the promotion of Russian literature in India. The award was instituted in 2008 jointly by the Russian Cultural Centre, “Russkiy Mir” Foundation and Moscow State Esenin Museum.

Inaugurating the valedictory function the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Government of India, Dr. Sashi Tharoor lauded the role of cultural exchange programmes in promoting People’s Diplomacy. “Knowledge of language and literature of other countries helps people to know more about the culture of these nations. This will lay the foundation for people-to-people diplomacy. The foundation for Russian- Indian time tested relationship is based on the people to people relationship”, said Dr. Tharoor. “It goes without saying that Russian literature greatly influenced Indian Writers”, he added. Dr. Tharoor also hoped that the forthcoming visit of the Russian President Vladimir Putin to India would further strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

Presiding over the function, Mr. Fedor Rozovskiy, Counsellor and Head of the Cultural Department of the Russian Embassy said that the Festival contributed greatly in promoting Russian Language and Literature in South India. He also emphasized the role of people’s diplomacy in creating a peaceful world.
The Award, citation and the medal were presented by Dr. Sashi Tharoor and Mr. Fedor Rozovskiy. The Award is instituted for writers in South India for their contribution in popularizing Russian literature through their translation.
Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation and Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Trivandrum Mr. Ratheesh C. Nair and journalist Mr. M.G. Radhakrishnan also spoke on the occasion.
