On November 8 the Russian Centre of Science & Culture in New Delhi saw inauguration of the photo exhibition to mark the 90th anniversary of Academician Eugeny P.Chelyshev, a prominent Russian scholar of Indian studies, linguist and expert in Indian languages and literature, who was awarded the J.Nehru International Prize and decorated with Padma Bhushan.

The solemn ceremony brought together distinguished representatives of Delhi bohemian and intellectual elite with many of them being close friends with Eugeny P.Chelyshev, well familiar with his works and outstanding biography shaped by gruesome wartime years when young Eugeny P.Chelyshev was defending his Motherland on the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War, unforgettable time of “hindi-rusi – bhai-bhai” as well as new Renaissance episodes of the Russian-Indian strategic partnership.

The historical photographs portray Eugeny P.Chelyshev with Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, Indian Presidents Mr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, R.Venkataraman and K.R.Narayanan, Ambassadors of the USSR and Russia to India I.A.Benediktov, N.M.Pegov, V.F.Maltsev, A.M.Kadakin, writers A.I.Solzhenitsin and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, painter S.N.Roerich and orientalist Y.N.Roerich and other outstanding Russian and Indian statesmen and public figures. The exhibition on display in the RCSC hall contains more than sixty valuable photographs. Most of them can be justly called unique and for this reason attracted special attention of the Indian audience and media enabling them to enrich their archives of long-lasting friendship between Russia and India.

According to H.E. Mr Alexander M.Kadakin, Ambassador of Russia to India and chief guest of the ceremony, “It is no exaggeration to say that our dearest Eugeny P.Chelyshev personifies the whole history of Russian-Indian relations. He is a genuine guru who not only taught me Hindi and Indian literature, but who also harbours all those best feelings that our people have for Great India. Today we have a chance to contemplate an exciting retrospection of Russian-Indian relations on these valuable private pictures which mostly were not meant for wide publication and therefore are especially precious.”

In his video address Academician Eugeny P.Chelyshev in shuddh Hindi cordially thanked the audience for the wonderful present and high appreciation of the work of his entire life. Read in Hindi >>>
